Panix has been providing shell accounts and Internet connections since 1989 —nearly twenty years! During that time we've developed a reputation for technical know-how, reliability and customer service unmatched by today's Internet "superstores". If you're looking for access to a professionally-maintained UNIX host, with the latest versions of all your favorite newsreaders, mailers, compilers and internet clients —and if you want your home and email address to be good for the rest of your life, not just until some DotCom.CEO decides that shell services aren't profitable enough to keep running— you want a Panix account.

We are all shell users ourselves, and we are shell snobs. We know a well-maintained UNIX shell is indispensable for serious programmers, web developers and net fiends. Nothing else gives you as much control over your operating environment, nothing else is as flexible. You know that, we know that, and that is why Panix will always make shell access our first service.

The cost of a Panix shell account is $10/month ($100/year prepaid). Panix shells can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet via ssh, sftp, telnet (including Kerberos 4 and 5), ftp, and the like.

Panix shell services include:

• Unmetered terminal access to our UNIX user hosts.
• Your choice of Unix shell (including zsh, tcsh, bash, etc.), or an easy-to-use menu interface.
• Access to well-maintained UNIX applications, utilities, compilers, etc. for email, newsgroups, FTP, telnet, text-only Web browsing, and other uses too numerous to mention.
  Check out the commands in /usr/local/bin and the packages we maintain.
• 500 MB RAID-protected disk storage free with the account, with extra space available (for a fee). This isn't just any RAID, either- it's a NetApp with multiple snapshots for instant recovery of accidentally deleted or altered files.
• NNTP access to thousands of newsgroups, including the panix.* hierarchy, meeting place of the Panix community.
• POP (or IMAP) access to your Panix email and NNTP access to newsgroups, from anywhere on the Internet (this lets you use today's popular mail and news apps).
• Access to a Panix Web server where you can keep your Web pages (even your own CGIs), with 1 GB of transfers per month included.
  (Additional charges apply for traffic over 1 GB/month.)
• Optional Security and encryption features:
  Panix provides a number of enhanced security options to its users. You can use fully encrypted authentication and communication via Kerberos 5 and/or SSH on Panix to help protect your account from unauthorized access. We also support S/Key for one-time passwords for cleartext and SSH logins.

• MySQL database is available as an add-on: $10/month.
• And much more. Chances are, we have what you're looking for... and if we don't, just ask! We may very well add it.

Personal Web pages:

Personal web pages (on the "www.panix.com" server) are included with all Panix single-user accounts.

You can activate your Web directory by just calling the office, or by running the "charlotte" command from your UNIX shell. We have a set of instructions available to our users, which covers this and many common site maintenance tasks.

Some notes about Panix personal Web pages:

• Your page is allowed 1 GB per month of free Web traffic ("hits") from outside Panix (i.e. the panix.com or access.net domains). You'll be billed $10/GB of traffic your page gets beyond that (a penny per MB).
• If you choose, you can limit your page so that it shuts down after a set amount of traffic.
  Your page will become available again at the start of your next billing month, and this feature will ensure that you never be billed for transfers beyond your chosen limit.
• Panix personal Web pages have full personal CGI privileges; check out the Panix Web FAQ for details.
• Files in your Web directory are counted toward your disk usage on Panix, just like all files you own on the system.
• You can have your own domain as an add-on at a price you can afford.

  • Your Registrar will bill you separately for name registration.
